Brand-New Topographics

Location 5 – Library – August Sander
‘I hate nothing more than sugary photographs with tricks, poses and effects. So allow me to be honest and tell the truth about our age and its people’
A lot of Sander’s photograph involve a subject standing awkwardly and poseless, and this is also the case in this image. Despite of his preference of having no ‘sugary’ effects, a lot of the photographs involved shallow depth of field, but they still stay true to the scene. The photograph places an individual in a location without specific direction, making it also stay true and create a deadpan view of the library and its students.
